ABOUT THIS ARTWORK:
The Waved Albatross, Phoebastria irrorate, is the only albatross that lives exclusively within tropical latitudes and this species is restricted to the northwestern coast of South America.
I was lucky to observe, film, and sketch this species in the Galapagos on Española Island, the only place they are known to breed. It was thrilling to watch pairs of these birds courting among the volcanic boulders where they’ll lay their ages.
NOTE: Check out my YouTube channel where I have a video I filmed of courting Waved Albatross in the Galapagos. CLICK HERE TO WATCH.
The Waved Albatross is listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ due to illegal poaching, entanglement in fishing lines, non-native predators, disease, and climate change among many factors.
This piece is part of a series I created for a show at the Winter Wings Birding Festival in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where I was the featured artist in 2022.
