ABOUT THIS ARTWORK:
The Southern Ground-Hornbill, Bucorvus leadbeateri, is an impressive bird of southern Africa, being the largest and heaviest species of hornbill. This painting depicts a female who sports a unique blue patch of skin surrounded by an inflatable red patch (males lack the blue).
This species is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ due to habitat loss, especially of the large or dead trees it requires for nesting. It is also vulnerable to poaching and is sometimes killed due to local superstitions that this bird is a harbinger of drought.
I created this painting as a demonstration for an online workshop I taught on this species as part of a series on African wildlife and in preparation for a future tour I may lead to South Africa.
