ABOUT THIS ARTWORK:

Description:

Ice Plant, Carpobrotus edulis, is endemic to South Africa but has been naturalized around the world, including in coastal California where I grew up. It is used as a ground cover to stabilize soil around roads and rail tracks but has become an invasive species. In fact, I was part of a team that pulled acres of these plants from an area we were restoring as California Legless Lizard habitat, which was back-breaking work!

Also known as the Hottentot Fig, it is one of many endemic succulents from the Cape Floristic Region of southern Africa.
