ABOUT THIS ARTWORK:
The Rosy Rockfish, Sebastes rosaceus, is a stunningly beautiful species. They live along the Pacific coast from Washington state to Baja California, Mexico. Like many of its relatives in the large rockfish genus, they are long-lived, up to 30 years, and are popular with fisherman, though their numbers are declining.
This painting was created based on a fresh specimen purchased at the Moss Landing Harbor when I was working at Moss Landing Marine Lab and spent about 20 hours getting all of its detailed spines and colors just right. Then I cooked it up for dinner; delicious!
