The Chinook Salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, is the largest and most valuable species of Pacific Ocean salmon and they range from California to Alaska. The adults return to their natal rivers to spawn. This painting depicts the stage called ‘sac fry’ which is the first stage after the eggs hatch.

This painting was created as part of a series of paintings depicting each stage of the Chinook Salmon life cycle. It was used as part of a 9-panel interpretive display that I designed for the Bureau of Land Management at Clear Creek Gorge Overlook near Redding, California, where folks can watch migrating salmon.
